Automatic Workload Characterization

چکیده
Workload characterization is an important and basic step for performance modeling and capacity planning. Traditional approaches for workload characterization often require sophisticated and time-consuming user assistance. In this paper we describe a number of algorithms for automatically classifying workloads and for determining what resources a workload used even when the operating system does not provide the data. The algorithms use statistics to find the processes and other resources that worked together to complete each type of transaction. Generally we will define a transaction as the work supporting a business activity, such as an entry in a log file. For Web-based commerce, business activity data is logged and readily accessible. We also show how automatic workload characterization can be done without a log file.

Workload Distribution in Fault Simulation
Simulation at the gate level is computationally very expensive. Parallel processing is one technique to reduce simulation time. Possessing knowledge of the distribution of computational activity in simulation can aid in parallelizing it eeciently. We present a new characterization of the distribution of the computational workload in fault simulation. Our empirical analysis shows that the worklo...

Formation micro imager (FMI) can directly reflect changes of wall stratums and rock structures. Conventionally, FMI images mainly are analyzed with manual processing, which is extremely inefficient and incurs a heavy workload for experts. Iranian reservoirs are mainly carbonate reservoirs, in which the fractures have an important effect on permeability and petroleum production. In this paper, a...
متن کاملCharacterizing Computer Systems’ Workloads
The performance of any system cannot be determined without knowing the workload, that is, the set of requests presented to the system. Workload characterization is the process by which we produce models that are capable of describing and reproducing the behavior of a workload. Such models are imperative to any performance related studies such as capacity planning, workload balancing, performanc...

متن کاملUnderstanding Open Proxies in the Wild
This paper conducts an extensive measurement study of open proxies to characterize how much these systems are used, what they are used for, and who uses them. We scanned the Internet to track proxy prevalence and monitored public statistics interfaces to gain insight into the machines hosting open proxies. We estimate that 220 TB of traffic flows through open proxies each day, making them one o...
